The university was established in 1981 as a college of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and was upgraded to a full-fledged university in April 2001. It is one of the state universities established by the government of Abia State to increase access to higher education in the state.
The main campus of ABSU is located on an extensive site covering about 500 hectares of land on the outskirts of Uturu town.
