In 1670 , the first European settlement was founded on the territory of South Carolina – Charles Town (modern Charleston). In 1729, Carolina was divided into North and South. South Carolina became an independent royal colony – the province of South Carolina. After the end of the War of Independence, the colony became the eighth state of the new state. South Carolina was an agricultural state dominated by cotton plantations. In 1860South Carolina was the first southern state to secede from the United States in protest against the abolition of slavery. About 60,000 residents of the state participated in the Civil War. After the war, the period of Reconstruction began. Industrialization began in the state. In agriculture, they switched from growing cotton to growing soybeans and corn.
