Geography

The state of Indiana borders the states of Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan.

The capital and largest city of the state is Indianapolis. Major cities are Fort Wayne, South Bend, Indiana.

Evansville is a city in the American state of Indiana with a population of 121,582. This makes it the 178th city in the United States (2000). Its area is 105.4 km², making it the 158th city.

History

  • 1812: Colonel Hugh McGary founds Evansville. On May 27, he purchases 200 acres of forest on the banks of the Ohio River. This area is now known as downtown Evansville. 130 acres are later sold to Generals Robert M. Evans and James W. Jones. That is when the name of this city came into being.
  • 1819: Evansville residents: 101.
  • 1820: Construction of the courthouse at 3rd & Main Street.
  • 1832: 50 cm of ice on the river. 25 inhabitants (almost 10% of the total population) die as a result of a cholera epidemic.
  • 1838: Population has grown to 1,228 of whom 30 are African Americans.

The only daily newspaper is the Evansville Courier & Press, run by The EW Scripps Company. The newspaper also publishes the monthly Evansville Business Journal and owns the paper in neighboring Henderson. Evansville Living is published twice a month by the Tucker Publishing Group. Other publications include Maturity Journal, a free monthly magazine aimed at the elderly, News4U, a free monthly entertainment magazine, and Club Evansville, a magazine aimed at the city’s youth.
